Solar Panels need to be positioned just right to maximize power harvesting. The current and power output of photovoltaic solar panels are approximately proportional to the sun’s intensity. At a given intensity, a solar panel's output current and operating voltage are determined by the characteristics of the load. If that load is a battery, the battery's internal resistance will dictate the module's operating voltage. A solar panel, which is rated at 17 volts will put out less than its rated power when used in a battery system. That’s because the working voltage will be between 12 and 15 volts. Because wattage (or power) is the product of volts multiplied by the amps, the module output will be reduced. For example, a 50-watt solar panel working at 13.0 volts will products 39.0 watts (13.0 volts x 3.0 amps = 39.0 watts). This is important to remember when sizing a PV system. An I-V curve is simply all of a solar panel's possible operating points (voltage/current combinations) at a given cell temperature and light intensity. Increases in cell temperature increase a solar panel’s current slightly, but significantly decrease voltage output. PV solar panels are very sensitive to shading. Unlike solar thermal panels used in hot water heating that can tolerate some shading, many brands of PV solar panels cannot even tolerate shading from the branch of a leafless tree.
Shading obstructions can be from “soft” or “hard” sources. If a tree branch, roof vent, chimney or other item is shading from a distance, the shadow is diffuse or dispersed. These soft sources significantly reduce the amount of light reaching a solar panel’s cells. Hard sources are defined as those that stop light from reaching solar cells, such as a blanket, tree branch, bird dropping sitting directly on top of the glass. If even one full cell is hard shaded, the voltage of that module will drop to half of its un-shaded value in order to protect itself. If enough cells are hard shaded, the module will not convert any energy and will, in fact, become a tiny drain of energy on the entire system.
Partial shading of even one cell on a 36-cell solar panel, will reduce its power output. Because all cells are connected in a series string, the weakest cell will bring the others down to its reduced power level. Therefore, whether 1/2 of one cell is shaded, or 1/2 a row of cells is shaded, the power decrease will be the same and proportional to the percentage of area shaded, in this case 50%.
When a full cell is shaded, it can consume energy produced by the remainder of the cells, and trigger the solar panel to protect itself. The solar panel will route the power around that series string. If even one full cell in a series string is shaded, as seen on the right, it will likely cause the module to reduce its power level to 1/2 of its full available value. If a row of cells at the bottom of a solar panel is fully shaded, as seen in Figure 7, the power output may drop to zero. The best way to avoid a drop in output power is to avoid shading whenever possible.
Tilt Angle
To capture the maximum amount of solar radiation over the course of a year, a solar array should be tilted at an angle approximately equal to a site's latitude, and facing 15 degrees of due south. To optimize winter performance, the solar array can be tilted 15 degrees more than the latitude angle, and to optimize summer performance, 15 degrees less than the latitude angle. At any given instant, an array will output maximum available power when pointed directly at the sun. To compare the energy output of your array to its optimum value, you will need to know the site's latitude, and actual tilt angle of your array--which may be the slope of your roof if your array is flush-mounted. If your solar array tilt is within 15% of the latitude angle, you can expect a reduction of 5% or less in your system's annual energy production. If your solar array tilt is greater than 15 degrees off the latitude angle, the reduction in your system's annual energy production may fall by as much as 15% from its peak available value. During the winter months at higher latitude, the reduction will be greater. Maximum power is derived at the knee of the curve. Check the amperage generated by the solar array at your battery's present operating voltage to better calculate the actual power developed at your voltages and temperatures.
Azimuth Angle and Magnetic Declination
If a south-facing roof is unavailable, an east or west-facing surface is the next best option. ( Micro inverter Solar Power Grid-tied systems allow for your solar panels to be facing more than one direction, while centralized grid-tied inverter systems allow for only one orientation.) Be aware that solar power output decreases proportionally with a horizontal angle or "azimuth," greater than 15 degrees from due south. The decrease in annual power output from a latitude-tilted east or west-facing array may be as much as 15% or more in the lower latitudes or as much as 25% or more in the higher latitudes of the United States. Avoid directing your tilted solar panels northwest, north or northeast, as you'll get little power output. Magnetic declination, the angle difference between magnetic south and true solar south, must also be taken into account when determining proper solar array orientation. If a magnetic compass alone is used to determine where to point the array, you may not capture the maximum declination field lines in North America, see the map on the right.
Tech Tip: Finding Solar South during Daylight Savings Time
When the U.S. is using Daylight Savings Time, solar noon is actually at 1 pm by the clock. If at 1 pm, a stake is driven into the ground, a shadow is created that points north and south. The stake will be at the exact solar south end of the shadow. While you could use a sextant to measure the sun's height above the horizon like the sailors used to, the stake and clock method will get you close enough as to not make much of a difference. A Green Beret neighbor of mine told me his trick. "At solar noon, put a block of wood on the glass of the solar panel. Rotate and tilt the rack until there is no shadow on the glass, there is your perfect adjustment."

Solar Panels 101
Solar Panel Cell Types
Monocrystalline
Description:
As the name implies, monocrystalline solar panels are made from a single crystal structure. They are the oldest of the technologies and the solar cells have a uniform flat color. Monocrystalline solar panels are a little more efficient and more expensive. You can install fewer high-efficiency mono panels, but the cost per watt is more expensive.
Best Use:
Residential and Commercial Solar Projects, especially if there is limited installation space.
Polycrystalline
Description:
Making polycrystalline panels is cheaper and it's a newer technology. The silicon cools unevenly and creates many different crystals giving it a less uniform appearance. Polycrystalline solar panels tend to be the most affordable, but they also put out a little less power. Even so, poly panels are gaining in efficiency and will usually have the lowest price per watt.
Best Use:
Residential, Commercial, Utility-Scale Solar Projects
Solar Panel Cell Sizes
60 Cell
Description:
60-cell solar panels tend to be the most common for residential and commercial systems. Most 60-cell panels measure around 66x40”, with power output ranging from 270-320+ watts.
Best Use:
Most Residential and Commercial Solar Projects
72 Cell
Description:
72-cell panels are commonly used for larger systems, especially utility-scale but also residential and commercial projects. Most 72-cell panels measure 77x40” with power output in the range of 325-400 watts. 72-cell panels are ideal for larger systems because the bigger size reduces the total number of connections and components, making for an easier installation with less maintenance.
Best Use:
Large Scale Residential and Commercial Projects, Utility-Scale Projects
Small Panels
Description:
Smaller panels are available for RVs, boats, and remote off-grid power systems. 12-volt panels are available in sizes from 5-160 watts. There are also small 24-volt panels available in a few sizes up to 190 watts. These solar panels have a nominal output of either 12 volts or 24 volts, which means they are designed for off-grid use and can’t be used in grid-tied PV systems. A few manufacturers offer flexible solar panels for RV, Marine and camping which are exceptionally lightweight and easy to install.
Best Use:
RVs, Boats, Remote Off-Grid

Solar Duct
Solar Air-Heating Technology Engineered for Roof Top Application
Sometimes the roof is better. That is why Conserval dreamed up SolarDuct. Like the original SolarWall technology, SolarDuct uses the power of the sun to heat your building’s ventilation air, reducing energy consumption, heating costs and greenhouse gas emissions The modular SolarDuct units are arranged and assembled similar to traditional PV solar panels, and the resulting SolarDuct arrays integrate seamlessly with existing rooftop mechanical equipment.
How it Works
Buildings with centralized heating and ventilation systems draw fresh air through HVAC units In winter, these units consume tremendous amounts of energy to heat the cold incoming air to comfortable indoor temperatures. With SolarDuct, incoming fresh air is solar-heated before it reaches the HVAC unit, minimizing building energy consumption throughout the heating season. When the sun’s radiation heats the surface of the SolarDuct array, fresh, solar-heated air accumulates on the surface of the panels. The existing rooftop HVAC units draw this solar-heated air through thousands of micro-perforations in the panels This solar-heated air gathers within the SolarDuct cabinet space and travels to the HVAC unit’s fresh air intake via insulated rooftop mechanical ducting. In the summer, when solar-heated air is not desired, the SolarDuct system is bypassed and the rooftop HVAC units will draw direct from ambient. With SolarDuct, incoming fresh air is heated up to 75°F above ambient temperatures. Independent monitoring studies have shown that effectively-designed SolarDuct systems can displace 20-50% of the building heating load.

How it works
SolarWall® Single StageMake the statement a sustainable one with the original solar cladding system
The original SolarWall Single-Stage system is a favourite of faciliy managers and design professionals alike. The SolarWall technology uses the power of the sun to heat your building’s ventilation air, minimizing energy consumption, heating costs and greenhouse gas emissions throughout the heating season.Available in a veriety of panel profiles and colors, the system brings a measure of architectural versatility that sets it apart from other renewable energy technologies.
How it Works
Buildings with centralized heating and ventilation systems draw fresh air through HVAC units. In winter, these units consume tremendous amounts of energy to heat the cold incoming air to comfortable indoor temperatures. With a SolarWall system, incoming fresh air is solar heated before it reaches the fresh air side of the HVAC or the HRV/ERV unit, minimizing building fuel consumption throughout the heating season. When the sun’s radiation heats the surface of the SolarWall facade, fresh, solar-heated air accumulates on the surface of the collector. The existing HVAC units draw this solar-heated air through thousands of tiny perforations in the SolarWall panels.
This solar-heated air gathers in the air cavity behind the SolarWall panels, and travels to the existing HVAC unit’s fresh air intake via mechanical ducting. In the summer, when solar-heated air is not desired, the SolarWall system is bypassed and the HVAC system will draw direct from ambient. SolarWall Single-Stage systems can heat the incoming fresh air up to 75°F above ambient temperatures. In this configuration, significantly less heating fuel is required to heat the building’s fresh air supply. In fact, independent monitoring studies have
shown that effectively-designed SolarWall systems can displace 20-50% of the building heating load. The SolarWall technology is sometimes referred to by different names in the marketplace, from unglazed transpired collector (UTC) or transpired solar collector (TSC), to solar heated wall or solar perforated wall. Whatever the nomenclature, give us a call and we will design the best SolarWall system type for your facility.
SolarWall PV/T
Photovoltaics (PV) convert solar energy into electricity. SolarWall harnesses solar energy to heat air. With the new SolarWall PV/T systems, photovoltaic panels are installed overtop SolarWall panels, producing 100% renewable electricy and heat from the same surface
This cogeneration technology is also available in the SolarDuct PV/T rooftop application
Photovoltaic (PV) component:
The PV panels convert solar radiation into an electric current that can be used on-site, stored for later use, or fed back to the electrical grid for financial incentives. The majority of the solar radiation striking the PV panels, however, is lost as heat energy.
Thermal (T) component:
The SolarWall or SolarDuct system doubles as the PV-racking system and draws the excess heat away from the PV modules, significantly increasing their electrical output. The heat generated from the PV and solar thermal collector panels is used to heat the building’s fresh air supply. The existing HVAC intake fans draw this fresh, solar-heated air through micro-perforations in the SolarWall panels, through insulated mechanical ducting,
and into the HVAC units.

SolarWall 2-Stage system
Inspired by the demand for a powerful space heating application, the SolarWall 2-Stage system takes the original SolarWall technology one step further. SolarWall 2-Stage is equipped with transparent glazing panels and directs the inbound fresh air through two heating stages. This design delivers an even greater temperature rise-maximizing building energy conservation, heating cost savings, and greenhouse gas emissions reductions.
First heating stage:
Solar radiation heats the metal SolarWall panels, generating a boundary layer of fresh, solar-heated air on the surface of the collector. Intake fans draw this warm air through thousands of micro-perforations in the panels. The warm air gathers in the air cavity within the collector.
Second heating stage:
Solar radiation penetrates the polycarbonate glazing, heating the 2nd stage of metal SolarWall panels. Protected from heat loss by wind sheer, the warm air inside the cavity picks up even more heat before being drawn through theperforations in the 2nd stage of SolarWall panels.
SolarWall NightSolar
NightSolar® systems can be configured to offer solar energy generation and conventional energy displacement up to 24 hours a day, all year long. This has been made possible because the SolarWall collector surface can be used for both cooling (in the warmer months) and also heating (in colder months). The end result to the building owner is substantial energy savings that occurs from reducing on-site cooling and heating costs by up to 50%. NightSolar® systems remove energy from the air to cool buildings without the use of compressors or refrigeration systems. This solar cooling technology is based on the scientific principle of nocturnal radiation cooling, which can cool a roof by as much as 10°C (18°F) below ambient temperature on a clear night. As warm night air touches the cooler surface of the NightSolar® panel, heat is transferred to the surface, which cools the air by radiating the heat to the cold night sky. The chilled air is then drawn in through perforations in the collector and enters the HVAC unit via an economizer cycle. This cooling has the ability to reduce or even displace conventional air conditioning from sunset to sunrise. During the daytime, the NightSolar® system keeps the roof in the dark and thereby reduces daytime heat gains normally transmitted through the roof.
Solar Heated Animal Barns
The SolarWall technology is easily integrated into conventional livestock ventilation systems and pre-heats the incoming air by as much as 50°F (27°C) in these applications. SolarWall systems will accommodate up to 1.25 cfm per square foot of barn floor. (Minimum ventilation)
In poultry ventilation, SolarWall system can be designed to handle the minimum ventilation requirements for the winter, spring and fall months, as well as the first two weeks in summer for the brooding period. For poultry, the typical indoor temperatures begin at around 90°F (32°C) for the brooding period and are gradually decreased to around 70°F (22°C) as the chickens becomes bigger. This means that chicken barns (as well as other forms of livestock) can require heat for up to 10 months of the year. In these applications, SolarWall systems have been credited with decreasing the use of traditional fuel by up to 30%. This substantial – and ongoing – reduction in operating costs improves profitability, and illustrates why this solar ventilation technology has been extensively used in the chicken and hog communities. As well, chicken producers have reported additional benefits of solar poultry ventilation in terms of decreased bird mortality due to improved indoor air quality. As well, cold drafts on chicken are eliminated because the metal SolarWall system provides an additional baffle that stops incoming cold wind. The SolarWall technology is also helpful for eliminating humidity and for drying nurseries after thorough cleanings.
Pre-heating application:
The existing HVAC fans draw solar heated air through the SolarWall collector and into the building’s heating and ventilation network.
Over the heating season, significantly less heating fuel is required to heat the solar-heated fresh air to set point. In the cooling season, the SolarWall is simply bypassed.
Space heating application:
SolarWall intake fans draw the solar-heated air through the collector and into the facility whenever heat is required. In lofty spaces, destratification fans will push the warm air down to occupancy level, maximizing occupant comfort and energy savings.

Recent field monitored NightSolar® installations are reporting as much as a 50% overall cooling savings on buildings using existing fans and economizers. And the technology can also be used to still generate daytime heating.
NightSolar® systems utilize a ventilated roof design (also known as above-sheathing ventilation) that is highly desirable for all buildings with metal roofs. This reduces daytime cooling by shading & ventilating the roof, meaning that unwanted solar heat is naturally vented while drying any condensation that may have occurred on the roof.
Oak Ridge National Laboratory states “we serendipitously discovered the second major advance in roofs for our century: We found that elevating the roof cover from the roof deck to induce above-sheathing ventilation is as important as increasing solar reflectance and may be the stronger player in reducing heat gain into the attic. The two combined can reduce heat gain through the roof by 50% compared to nailed asphalt shingle roofs.“

Roof Mount Solar Racking Systems
A roof mount is a great option if your roof is sun-exposed and in good condition. It’s important to choose high quality components for a long-lasting, weatherproof installation.
You’ll need flashings, clamps or tile hooks to attach the racks to your rooftop. There are various options depending on your racking and type of roof (shingle, metal, or tile.)
Flat rooftops (or low slope roofs) can use similar racking hardware with tilt legs to achieve an appropriate angle. There are also ballasted racking systems, which aren’t drilled into the roof at all, but instead are weighted down with blocks.
Want to know the best way to mount solar panels on your roof?
Ground Mount Solar Racking System
Ground Mounts allow you to pick the optimal tilt angle in a south-facing direction. A standard ground mount is built on a structure of steel pipe and concrete at a fixed-tilt angle.
Pole Mounts allow you to adjust the tilt angle to maximize your power output throughout the seasons. A steeper tilt angle captures more power in the winter and also sheds snow off the panels. Pole mounts can be installed above foliage & snow banks to keep the panels clear of debris.
Trackers are pole-mounted racks that follow the sun to maximize daily production. Trackers are the most expensive option, and require maintenance, due to the complexity and moving parts. Trackers are mainly used for large utility-scale PV installations. Residential systems are typically better off installing a few extra panels on a fixed array.
