IF YOU NEED IT, WE HAVE IT. WE ARE HERE TO SERVE YOU
CONNECTING TO THE GRID
The most common way to connect a residential solar system to the grid is in the main breaker box through a new dedicated breaker, as shown in the schematic.
To determine the rating of your main breaker box, read the label on the box. It will tell you its rating. In the photo of the label, I have a 125A busbar in my main breaker box. Then look at the big main breaker in the box, looking at the photo of the Main Breaker Box Components. I have a 100A main breaker. Then looking at that photo again, you can see I have a 30A 2-pole breaker at the other end for my solar inverter.
The 120% Rule and Your Main Breaker Panel’s Limitations
The altE Store started designing and selling grid-tied solar systems way back around the year 2000. Back then, a typical solar system was about 500W. Nowadays as the price of solar panels drops, the size of the solar array rises. A larger solar array requires a larger inverter. Now 10,000W inverters and larger that used to be reserved to commercial solar systems are now becoming commonplace in residential. Once solar inverters get larger than 7680W, installers often will run into a restriction from the National Electric Code (NEC) that needs to be addressed.
This restriction has become known as the 120% rule. We are going to explain the rule, and cover ways to deal with it.
MAIN BREAKER BOX
NEC705.12(B)(2)(3)(b) states that where there are two power sources, the grid and the solar inverter, the sum of their breakers cannot equal more than 120% of the busbar rating of the breaker box. What that means is if you have a typical 200A rated main breaker box, and have a 200A main breaker in it, you cannot add another breaker for the inverter that is larger than 40A, because 200A x 120% = 240A, which is the 200A main breaker plus the 40A inverter breaker. The inverter breaker must be at he opposite end of the breaker box to prevent concentration of the current at one end of the busbar. If both breakers are near each other, the sum can only equal 100% of the busbar.
In my example in the photos, my 125A breaker box can have a total of 150A (i.e. 125A x 120%) of source breakers. With a 100A main breaker, and a 30A inverter breaker, I am code compliant with 130A total (100A main breaker + 30A 2-pole inverter input breaker). That 30A breaker can handle a 5700W inverter.
BREAKER SIZES
Since a grid-tie inverter is generally running more than 3 hours, it is considered continuous load. NEC requires the breakers be sized at 125% of the inverter’s rated output. So a 7680W inverter that outputs 240V, outputs 32A (7680W ÷ 240V = 32A). That requires a 40A breaker (32A x 125% = 40A). Therefore, a 10kW inverter would need a 60A breaker (10,000W ÷ 240V = 41.6A x 125% = 52.08A, round up to next available size of 60A). A 200A main breaker and a 60A breaker adds up to 260A, which is 130% of the rated busbar, and not allowed.
It gets even worse if you have a 100A breaker box, you are limited to only adding a 20A breaker for a 3800W inverter.
Note that this restriction does not include the breakers that are used by your loads, only breakers that are for a power source, like the grid and inverter.
Option #1: Downsize the Main Breaker
The goal for a 200A breaker box is to keep the sum of the main breaker and the inverter breaker at or under 240A. If you need to add a 60A breaker for the inverter, you could swap out your main 200A breaker for a 175A breaker. That then gives you 175A + 60A = 235A, which is less than 240A.
This may be the least expensive option, but it is not ideal. The downside is that you will now restrict the amount of current allowed to and from the grid. If you have high energy loads all come on at once, you may have a nuisance trip on your main breaker, where it used to be able to handle the loads just fine with the bigger breaker.
Option #2: Replace the Main Breaker Box
If you do have high loads and you cannot reduce your main breaker with a lower amperage, you could replace the whole breaker box with a 400A breaker box. This will give you the ability to add up to 80A for the inverter(s), giving you over 15kW of solar power.
Unfortunately, this is the most expensive option, as you need to buy a new breaker box for thousands of dollars, coordinate with the electric company to temporarily turn off your service and most likely hire an electrician to make the swap. This entails moving all of the circuits from the old box to the new box, a very labor intensive project, if the existing wires are even long enough to do it.
Option #3: Line Side Tap
An increasingly common solution is known as a Line Side tap, a.k.a. Supply Side tap. This work is usually done by a licensed electrician. The main breaker box is completely bypassed, and a fused AC Disconnect is used to connect the inverter to the grid between the utility meter and the main breaker box. This removes most restrictions imposed by the breaker box, as long as the main breaker is big enough to receive the power from the inverter.
Solar power from the inverter is either sent back into the main breaker box through the main breaker, same as the grid power, or it is sold to grid. Line side taps do not interfere with net metering or Feed-in Tariffs (FiT), although an additional meter may be required as a dedicated production meter. This production meter will measure all of the solar power generated, regardless of if you use it or sell it. Unlike the bi-directional net meter, it only spins forward, counting the Wh you made with the sun.
The electric company would be required to agree to this configuration, some companies do not like their clients doing a Line-side Tap.
Square D
Nema 3R Disconnects
According to the National Electric Code, section 690.15, PV arrays must have a disconnecting means to isolate the inverter from the PV power source. Utility intertie inverters that utilize PV arrays with voltages above 250 VDC require a disconnect rated for 600 VDC to perform this function. The Square-D 600 VDC 30 amp 3-pole safety switches are UL listed to handle 13A at 600VDC per pole. They can be used for disconnecting up to three PV arrays for three grid-tie inverters. It has wiring lugs that are rated to accept two #14 to #10 wires in each lug. This allows the disconnect switch to also act as a string combiner in systems that utilize two strings of PV modules per inverter. All other Square D 600 VDC disconnects are rated for disconecting one string at full rated power.
Many utilities require an AC disconnect between an intertie inverter and the AC load center, close to the AC service entrance, with a visible and lockable handle. A 30 amp 240 volt disconnect is good for up to 5kW at 240 VAC (one or two 2500W intertie inverters) and the 60 amp disconnect is good for up to 12.5kW (three to five 2500W intertie inverters). For connection of multiple inverters to one of these disconnects, use an AC load center, with a circuit breaker for each inverter installed, as an AC combiner box between the inverters and the disconnect switch. The breakers can be back-fed with the inverter outputs and the load center main lugs will handle the combined outputs to be connected to the AC disconnect.
Use Class-R fuses of the proper amperage for fused disconnects. Disconnects are raintight (NEMA 3R) for outdoor use.

SUB-PANELS
An additional twist can be presented if the inverter is being fed into a sub-panel, for example in a barn, which is fed from the main breaker box. What breakers need to be included in the calculations? The breaker from the main feeding the sub-panel? The main breaker in the sub-panel? There used to be a bit of confusion about this, but it was cleared up in NEC 2014. The inverter breaker in the sub-panel is the breaker to use in the calculations. For example, picture a 200A main breaker box feeding a 125A sub-panel through a 100A breaker, with a 100A main breaker in the 125A sub-panel. That sub-panel can have a 40A breaker added to it for the 7600W inverter, as 100A + 40A = 140A, which is under the 150A restriction. Carry that 40A upstream to the 200A main breaker box, that equals 240A total, and is allowed with the 240A restriction.

Harvest More Power with the Enphase IQ Microinverter Grid-tie System
This Enphase gridtie system includes 12 Mission Solar 305 watt panels paired with 12 Enphase IQ6+ Microinverters and the necessary cablling and connectors for a safe, simple and code-compliant install. Our package also includes durable IronRidge XR100 roof-mount racking hardware for a complete, ready-to-install solution. We choose only Tier 1 solar panels and UL listed components for an easy-to-maintain, NEC-compliant system that will last for years.
What Are the Benefits of Using Enphase Microinverters?
Traditional gridtie systems use string inverters and when a panel is damaged or shaded, it affects the entire string, significantly reducing power output. Enphase Microinverters allow each panel to operate independently at their peak efficiency. If a panel is shaded or damaged it won’t affect the rest of the system. Microinverters also provide more design flexibility by allowing you to position modules on different facing roof pitches and in less ideal locations. Microinverter systems are easy to install and can be expanded with additional modules and microinverters.
Monitoring Your System
Monitoring system production over the internet is easy and free with the included Enphase IQ Envoy. The Envoy can also be used for advanced diagnostics and troubleshooting by Enphase tech support in the event of a fault. Check out our Enphase monitoring demo for an example and more information.

Additional features provided in the Solar Boost 2512iX-HV version include automatic equalization, battery temperature sensor input, full IPN network compatibility, and an auxiliary output. The auxiliary output can serve as a 25 amp load controller, 25 amp lighting controller, or as a 2 amp auxiliary battery charger. The auxiliary battery charge feature is ideal for charging a separate battery such as the engine battery in an RV. Blue Sky Energy’s advanced Integrated Power Net™, or IPN Network, allows multiple charge controllers to communicate with each other and coordinate their activities to charge the battery as a single coordinate charging machine. The IPN network also allows networked controllers to share an optional battery temperature sensor, UCM and remote display. Complete IPN network functionality is provided within the charge controller and no additional hardware or software is required.
How Do Solar Boost Charge Controllers Increase Charge Current?
Solar Boost charge controllers increase charge current by harvesting more PV power. A conventional charge controller simply connects the PV module to the battery when the battery is discharged which can artificially limit how much power a PV module can deliver. Patented Solar Boost MPPT technology operates the PV module at it’s optimum voltage where it can produce the greatest amount of power rather than at battery voltage. The higher power extracted from the module is then provided to the battery as increased charge current. The actual charge current increase you will see varies primarily with module temperature and battery voltage. In comfortable temperatures, current increase typically varies between 10 to 25%, with 30% or more easily achieved with a discharged battery and cooler temperatures. What you can be sure of is that Solar Boost charge controllers will deliver the highest charge current possible for a given set of operating conditions.

WHAT IS AC COUPLING?
Grid-tie systems are the most cost effective and easiest systems to install. Until the day the grid goes down, and your house is without power while your neighbor with the loud, smelly generator is sitting in their house drinking frozen margaritas and watching TV, and your spouse is giving you the evil eye. What do you do now? No, you can't run an extension cord to your neighbor's house and hope they don't notice (trust me, I know). UL requirements cause grid-tie systems to shut down immediately if the grid goes out to prevent accidentally electrocuting the lineworkers while they are working on the power lines to restore power.
HOW DOES AC COUPLING WORK?
Grid-tie with Battery Backup Vs. AC Coupled Systems
A standard grid-tie solar PV system will not power your home during a utility outage, so in areas where blackouts and weather-related outages are common, a battery backup system may add value and convenience.
Your choices include using a grid-tie with battery backup system, or an AC Coupled system. AC coupled systems may be used with an existing grid-tie system with battery backup, or with a system that is completely off-grid.
Above all, it is important to note that typically, these backup systems are not designed to meet the power demands of your entire home, and while they can be modified to meet these demands, the complexity of the job substantially increases the cost.
Grid-Tie with Battery Backup
However, designing and sizing a grid-tie system with a battery backup is much more complex than designing a standard system without energy storage. This is due to the system performing two different functions.
The first is offsetting the power purchased from an electric utility, as standard grid-tie systems do. The second is providing emergency backup power during potential power outages. Each of these purposes have completely separate design considerations and require a different set of calculations, which is why it is best to consult with a professional, especially if you are unfamiliar with the system. Both parts of the system perform a necessary function. While the grid-tie portion of the system is designed to offset energy consumption during peak sun-hours, which vary depending on where the PV array is located, the battery backup is instead designed to meet the power demands of critical loads that need to operate during a grid outage. It is important to remember that these types of systems are designed to run only specific circuits located in a separate sub-panel, and as such, are not designed to power the entire home. While this can be done, powering the entire home increases cost and complexity of the system dramatically.
AC-Coupled Systems
Like a grid-tie with battery backup, an AC-coupled system is form of battery-based system. It can be used in either a grid-tie system with a battery backup application, or in a completely off-grid system. Rather than using a battery charge controller with the PV array, AC-coupled systems utilize standard grid-tie inverters that produce AC power that can then be “sold” back to the utility grid while the grid is connected. You also have the option for a separate battery-based inverter to use the AC power to charge a battery bank during a grid outage.
In addition to a standard grid-tie inverter, a second bidirectional battery based inverter is used with a battery bank to provide AC power during an outage. During normal operation, when the grid is up, the power from the PV array and grid-tie inverter passes through the sub-panel and battery inverter’s built-in AC transfer switch and then onto the utility main panel. From the main panel, it is either consumed by house loads connected there or exported to the grid. Should a grid outage occur, the grid-tie inverter will automatically shut off, while the battery-based inverter switches off the grid connection and begins to power the loads in the protected loads panel, using energy drawn from the battery bank. Because the grid-tie inverter is connected in this sub-panel, it will detect the AC power from the battery inverter and will turn back on after a short 5 minute delay. After this delay, the power output will be used by the protected loads connected to the sub-panel, or they may be used to charge the batteries via the battery-based inverter or charger.

Discover how much it costs to design a Solar system with Grid-Tied or Off Grid with a Backup Generator.
If the grid goes down or your off-grid solar system needs a backup charging source, it's nice to have a "Plan B". A properly installed and maintained generator lets your family get through these unexpected occurrences with minimal inconvenience, keeping the power on while you wait it out.
For supplemental off-grid power
On occasion, factors like shading, limited roof space, extended overcast weather, etc. can impact the power you get from solar panels (learn more about maximizing solar panel efficiency). In those cases, a supplemental generator can fill the gap between what the panels produce and what your appliances demand, enabling you to continue living "off-grid" without utility power.
As a sole off-grid power source
AMRtechnologiesSolar recommends our solar panels as the primary power source for your home, but we understand that's not always a possibility for every customer. We can also sell complete generator packages that are powerful enough to provide electricity to your entire house. An off-grid home can be powered directly by a generator or the generator can be used with an inverter and battery bank.

What Is A Hybrid Solar System?
Hybrid solar systems generate power in the same way as a common grid-tie solar system but use batteries to store energy for later use. This ability to store energy enables most hybrid systems to also operate as a backup power supply during a blackout, similar to a UPS system. Traditionally the term hybrid referred to two generation sources such as wind and solar but more recently the term 'hybrid solar' refers to a combination of solar and battery storage which unlike off-grid systems is connected to the electricity grid.
Hybrid solar systems enable you to store solar energy and use it when you're home during the evening when the cost of electricity is typically at the peak rate.
The ability to store and use your solar energy when desired is referred to as self-use or self-consumption. It works in the same way as an off-grid power system but the battery capacity required is far less, usually just enough to cover peak consumption (8 hours or less) as opposed to 3-5 days with a typical off-grid system.
Solar Hybrid Advantages
- Stores solar or low cost (off-peak) electricity.
- Allows use of solar energy during peak times (self-use or load-shifting)
- Power available during a grid outage or blackout – UPS function
- Enables advanced energy management (ie. peak shaving)
- Enables energy independence
- Reduces power consumption from the grid (reduced demand)
Solar Hybrid Disadvantages
- Higher cost than grid-feed solar. Mainly due to the high cost of batteries.
- More complex installation requires more room and higher install cost.
- Battery life of 7-15 years.
- May limit how many appliances you can run at the same time (depending on the type of hybrid inverter and its capability)
What is a battery ready system?
A battery ready system is a much like a common grid-connected solar system but has a hybrid (solar & battery) inverter rather than a typical string solar inverter. Most modern hybrid inverters have the battery charger and connection built in which makes adding a battery much easier in the future. However with the new generation AC battery systems a battery can be added to any existing grid-connected solar system at any time. Also as new inverter technology and batteries are evolving relatively fast then it is usually only worth while spending extra on a battery ready system if you plan on adding a battery within 2 years.
Why store solar energy in a battery?
Many governments and network operators have reduced the solar feed-in tariff or FiT (money or credit received for feeding solar energy to the grid). This means traditional grid-feed solar systems have become less attractive as most people are working during the day and not home to use the solar energy as it is generated, thus the energy is fed into the grid for very little return.

This means traditional grid-feed solar systems have become less attractive as most people are working during the day and not home to use the solar energy as it is generated, thus the energy is fed into the grid for very little return. A solar hybrid system stores your excess solar energy and can also provide back-up power during a blackout. This is perfect for home owners although for the majority of businesses which operate during the daylight hours, a common grid-feed solar system is still the most economical choice.
Generator Packages
12kW Kohler Off-Grid Generator Package
Description
Wholesale Solar’s 12kW off-grid Kohler generator package includes the essential components for an off-grid generator installation. In addition to Kohler’s legendary 12RES generator this package also includes the maintenance kit, carburetor heater and OnCue management system. This package does not include a transfer switch because most off-grid systems use an inverter/charger with a built-in transfer switch for the generator input. The 12RES generator is suitable for most off-grid homes and cabins and is typically paired with an inverter/charger ranging from 4kW up to 8kW in size. This generator package is the ideal solution for adding a generator to one of our off-grid systems. Battery not included, requires one Group 26 size automotive battery for engine starting.

Description
Kohler offers homeowners premium backup for both standby and off-grid applications in the form of their newly updated 14RESA home generator. Enclosed in a corrosion-proof polymer shell suitable for even the harshest environments, the 14RESA uses Kohler’s CH740 engine to produce 14kW of clean, stable power (12kW using natural gas). 32kVA of additional surge capacity is available as needed. The 14RESA is likely sufficient for backup of critical loads in most homes, but to cover larger power needs, two 14RESA units can be put in parallel using Kohler’s PowerSync® Automatic Parallel Module (sold separately) to produce up to 28kW of power. Installed outside on a concrete or gravel pad, the 14RESA operates at a neighborhood-friendly sound level not exceeding 67 dB(A) and meets EPA emission regulation standards for both propane and natural gas applications. Kohler’s sophisticated and user-friendly RDC2 Controller is included with all 14RESA units, allowing users to easily program and control their generator. The RDC2 Controller also includes the option to pre-program repeating maintenance exercises on a weekly or bi-weekly schedule, which supports longer equipment lifespan. Kohler’s sophisticated OnCue Plus Generator Management System, which allows homeowners to remotely monitor and control their 14RESA generator via web browser and/or smartphone app, is sold separately, as is the recommended CH740 Maintenance Kit.
