How exactly do solar panels work?

When it comes to saving money with solar, everything starts with sunlight and your solar panels. Every panel is made of clusters of photovoltaic cells (PV cells). When the sun shines on your solar panels, it hits the PV cells and excites electrons within them.

This party of electrons helps generate electricity that’s then sent down to your Sunrun solar system, and eventually, into your home to help power your washer and dryer!

What types of solar panels are available for my home?

Photovoltaic panels are made of silicon solar cells —silicon is expensive and makes up much of the high cost of panels. There are two types of commonly used home solar panels, and those are Monocrystalline and Polysilicon panels.

Monocrystalline vs. Polysilicon        panels

  1. Traditional solar panels (crystalline solar panels) are either monocrystalline or polysilicon. Monocrystalline panels are more efficient than polysilicon panels, but are more expensive.
  2. Thin film silicon panels are less expensive, but are much less efficient than crystalline solar panels. These panels typically take twice as much space to produce the same amount of electricity as crystalline panels.
  3. Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) panels are thin film solar panels that are the same size and shape as roofing shingles. They are more expensive, somewhat less efficient than traditional crystallines, but preferred by many consumers as the best-looking option currently on the market.
